John PY - 2017 T2 - Tintinalli's Emergency Medicine Manual, 8e AB - Over-the-counter analgesics, such as salicylates (ASA) and acetaminophen (APAP), can result in fatal overdose, but early identification of toxicity and initiation of appropriate treatment can significantly reduce mortality from these exposures. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) overdoses are rarely fatal and typically require only supportive care. The widespread availability of these medications in over-the-counter preparations, and in other products (e.g., ASA in oil of wintergreen, APAP in cough and cold preparations), can lead to both intentional and accidental toxicity.
