Colon carcinoma is the most common cause of mechanical obstruction of the colon; it is followed in frequency by sigmoid diverticulitis and volvulus, with these three accounting for more than 90% of cases of colonic obstruction. While adhesions and hernia account for more than 75% of small bowel obstructions, they are uncommon causes of large bowel obstruction.
