Ectopic pregnancy is the most common life-threatening emergency during the first trimester of pregnancy. The current incidence of ectopic pregnancy is difficult to estimate from existing data.1-3 The overall incidence of ectopic pregnancy has increased during the mid-twentieth century due to increased occurrence of pelvic inflammatory disease.1-3 History and physical examination have proven to be unreliable in excluding the presence of an ectopic pregnancy. Pelvic ultrasound (US) is the diagnostic test of choice in the initial evaluation of these patients with possible ectopic pregnancy.
