PY - 2018 T2 - Reichman's Emergency Medicine Procedures, 3e AB - Emergency Physicians commonly perform invasive procedures. These procedures have traditionally been taught using surface landmarks, with the assumption that anatomy is reliably similar from patient to patient. The increasing use of ultrasound (US) to assist in procedural guidance has demonstrated this is not the case. Using US to assist with procedures has numerous benefits (Table 8-1). It is safer for patients due to reducing complications. US improves patient comfort and satisfaction primarily because fewer attempts are required. The use of US usually decreases the duration of the procedure.
